TOBA: Documents

Once upon a time, long, long ago... Before the school farm closed in the 1980s, before 'Top School' was built in the 1950s, before girls were admitted in the 1920s... In fact, so long ago that no one quite knows the order of things, some 'excellent merchants of Burford', led by Simon Wysdome, established Burford School in 1571...

Here is an early 19th century report from Commissioners appointed by Parliament to enquire into the state of English rural education. It contains a wealth of fascinating, and sometimes rather surprising, information about the first 200 years of the history and progress of Burford School.

A most interesting look at the earliest history of the school... We often talk of Simon Wysdom being the prime mover in its establishing, but who else was involved, and why...

Another history of Burford School, this time from WJ Monk's 'History of Burford' of 1891
